App types: Public and private apps

When you publish your app, its app type determines how it’s distributed:

  • Public apps are Marketplace apps intended for distribution to multiple customers or workspaces. Marketplace listing visibility applies to public apps — a public app may be listed (discoverable in the Marketplace) or unlisted where Webflow supports that distribution model.
  • Private apps are custom apps for a specific workspace or custom implementation. Private apps don’t use Marketplace listing visibility and aren’t intended for broad distribution across multiple workspaces. Learn more about private apps.

Direct install is an installation access path — it isn’t an app type or a Marketplace visibility setting, and it may be used only when that install path is supported for the app’s approved distribution model.

User testing before publishing

Testing access lets you validate your app with approved users before broader distribution. Testing before launch is separate from creating a private app.

Want to test your app with a small group before going live? You can:

  • Request to add up to 5 test users at support.webflow.com with their Webflow emails.
  • Once added, share your app’s install URL so they can try it out.

FAQs

No. If your app is a custom app for a specific workspace or custom implementation, you can publish it as a private app and control who can install it. Select the “Private” option in the “Marketplace Visibility” section during submission. All private apps are reviewed just like public apps. Learn more about private apps.

Yes. You can submit updates at any time. Updates go through the same review process as your initial submission. App updates include material changes to the reviewed App experience, including changes to app functionality, user-facing behavior, requested permissions, submitted bundles, integrations, or resources that affect how the app operates for users. Use the “Submit an App” form and select “App Update” as the submission type.
